On a new episode of Future U, Len Cassuto, author of "The New PhD: How to Build a Better Graduate Education," delved into the complexities of graduate education and the inherent resistance to change within academia.Cassuto's insights challenge us to reconsider our perceptions of the academic job market and the purpose of graduate education. The reality that the golden era of guaranteed academic positions post-PhD was an exception rather than a rule is crucial for current and future graduate students, as well as academic institutions, to grasp. As we navigate the current landscape, the need for adaptability and openness to new models of graduate education and career paths beyond academia becomes increasingly clear. Cassuto's call to action is not just a reflection on past trends but a push towards a more dynamic and realistic approach to academic careers. This episode is made with support from Ascendium's Education Philanthropy and the .#HigherEd #HigherEducation

What is all the hype about “Ivy League”?The term Ivy League has been thrown around for nearly every famous educational institution. Let's clear it up, what does Ivy League mean? The Ivy League is a constellation of eight prestigious private research universities nestled in the Northeastern United States. Born out of a shared passion for athletics, these institutions, including Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, came together in 1954 under the NCAA's Division I athletic conference. Over time, their reputation transcended the sports arena, becoming synonymous with academic excellence, selective admissions, and a network of accomplished alumni. Here's the list of the Ivy League stars:Cornell UniversityHarvard UniversityPrinceton UniversityYale UniversityColumbia UniversityUniversity of PennsylvaniaBrown UniversityDartmouth CollegeTwo of these Ivy Leagues don’t house a business school, do you know which ones? Let me know in the comments! The Ivy Leagues extend well beyond academia, contrary to what most people think, and are an integral part of the culture around them.Did you know that Harvard is also home to the Harvard Hip Hop Archive and Research Institute? This treasure trove delves into the world of hip-hop, studying its evolution, trends, and cultural impact. Columbia University's Butler Library is home to a hidden tunnel system rumored to have inspired the Ghostbusters movie.Yale holds a treasure as baffling as it is intriguing – the Voynich Manuscript. Dating back to the fifteenth century, this enigmatic manuscript has stumped linguists, mathematicians, and historians for centuries. With its secrets still shrouded in mystery, it's a testament to the enduring allure of the Ivy League's intellectual quests. There are many more hidden mysteries around the Ancient Eight, waiting to be unlocked. Thank you to all the Alice Smith parents who came to my recent presentation called ‘How to get into Yale…and other questions you are not supposed to ask’. It was a pleasure to speak to so many parents at an event about university planning held at our primary school campus. There is often a stereotype in place of the pushy and unrealistic international school parent, demanding that their children have to get into the most well known universities in the world. In my experience, this is quite rare and most parents are often quite shy when it comes to asking questions about university admissions or are often just interested in how different systems work. It is also true that international school parents often need to plan much further ahead. They could be making decisions based on working in multiple countries and thinking about how international qualifications will relate back to their home country. For these reasons, I want to encourage parents to come and talk to me and my HE and Careers team regardless of the age of their children or the level of knowledge they have about the sector. If asking about places they know the names of like Yale or Oxford engages them in a more nuanced discussion about HE and Careers, then this can only be a positive thing.

🎓 From Academic Abyss to Scholarly Soar: My Journey at Southern Illinois University 🚀In 1966, as summer embraced the air, my band, The Messengers, dissolved, leaving me at a crossroads. With a little cash in hand, I enrolled in summer school with dreams of academic glory. But alas, the siren call of parties, pursuits, and the allure of libations led me astray, resulting in dismal grades that shook the foundation of my collegiate ambitions.🔔 However, the wake-up call came swiftly as the Dean of Students summoned me, questioning my commitment to academia. Determined to redeem myself, I vowed to fly right, and fly right I did. With grit and determination, I ascended from academic abyss to the lofty heights of scholarly success, achieving Bs, As, and ultimately, a coveted spot among the four-point elite.📚 Southern Illinois University became my sanctuary, my haven of knowledge, and my playground of learning. Dr. Delyte Morris, the visionary president, took me under his wing, recognizing my fervor for leadership and thirst for knowledge. As a student ambassador, I became intimately acquainted with every nook and cranny of our sprawling campus, regaling visitors with tales of our esteemed institution.🌟 But my pursuit of excellence didn't stop there. I embraced the art of selective learning, auditing classes to discern the crème de la crème of educators. I sought out professors who didn't just teach but inspired, who didn't just impart knowledge but ignited passion.🎙️ It was in the realm of speech that I found my calling, under the tutelage of Professor Paul Hibbs. His convocation series, a weekly pilgrimage for 5,000 freshmen, became my sanctuary of enlightenment. And as I delved into the world of current events, devouring every morsel of information, I realized that my journey wasn't just about academic accolades—it was about becoming wise.🌐 Today, as I reflect on those formative years at Southern Illinois University, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities, the mentors, and the lessons that shaped me. For it was there, in the hallowed halls of academia, that I discovered the true power of knowledge and the boundless potential of the human spirit. #AcademicJourney #SIUPride #NeverStopLearning

An exciting moment this week for Boston University! Our new President has taken the lead!Given my role in our central IT department, supporting the operations side of the University in many ways, I'm especially excited (and maybe challenged?) by the quote below. I look forward to hearing more of how she sees this:"One of the reasons I speak about operations is that high-quality operations give you a reliable outcome. And that’s how a large complex organization excels—through reliable experiences, high-quality student experiences, high-quality faculty and staff experiences, and making impactful research. All of that is by being strongly and intentionally focused on strategy and operations within a positive culture."https://lnkd.in/eBiXs3qP
