How to respond to Craigslist housing ads? ›

People post fake rental ads on Craigslist because they are scammers and are looking for easy money. Plus, some potential renters who may be looking for a new home may be a little desperate as well, because everyone needs a place to live in, of course.

Click on “Reply” located at the top-left corner of the Craigslist post. A floating menu with a list of email options will display on-screen. If the pop-up menu doesn't display, it's possible a third-party browser extension or add-on is preventing the pop-up from displaying properly.

Phishing scams on Craigslist are insidious attempts to steal personal information, such as passwords, account details, and financial data. Scammers often create fake listings or respond to your listings only to lead you toward providing sensitive information.

Unfortunately, no such protection exists for those replying to posts. When you reply directly from Craigslist, your email address will be visible to the recipient. To reply anonymously, you need to create a free Web-based email address, which does not contain identifiable information.

If they fire off another low-ball, I'll say "sorry, $xxx was definitely the lowest I'll take, if you want it, great, if not, no problem. Thanks for the offer." - end of story - if they lowball again, I just ignore 'em 'cause at that point they're just playing games.
